Tiger Tales Newsletter - May 7, 2026

Dear Hammond Elementary School Families,

At Hammond Elementary, hearing student voices is very important to us. We believe our students’ ideas, experiences, and perspectives help shape a stronger school community.

To best support the needs of our students and staff, the Howard County Public School System wants to hear from you. Please take a few moments to help your child complete this survey. Your voice is important, and your input will help us better understand what students and families need.

Since we are an elementary school and the County survey was created for all school levels, we have included some kid-friendly language here to help you discuss these ideas with your elementary school-aged child:

What is Student Voice?
Student voice means kids get to share their ideas, thoughts, and feelings about school. Grown-ups listen, and together we help make school a better place for everyone.

Our Promises About Student Voice

  • We work together.
Grown-ups do not make every decision by themselves. Students can help share ideas and make choices too.
  • Every voice matters.
Every student’s ideas are important. We want everyone to feel safe, included, and heard.
  • We listen and make changes.
When students share ideas, we do more than just listen. We use those ideas to help make school better.
  • Students help make school better.
What students think and feel helps teachers and school leaders make learning more fun, helpful, and fair.
  • We build trust together.
Students and grown-ups listen to each other, try to understand each other, and work together because we all want what is best for everyone.

We also invite you to share what you may already be doing to support student voice in your home or community. Your feedback will assist HCPSS in developing and delivering resources that are practical, meaningful, and actionable for our schools.

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure every student’s voice is heard and valued.

Sincerely,

Heather Moraff, Principal

Nykia Mapson, Assistant Principal
